Teaching English at Jose Miguel de Restrepo y Puerta School

English in this school develops communicative competence through classroom projects in a cross-curriculum way, according to the institutional pedagogical device. In these projects are possible to integrate English to another subjects with the purpose English learning becomes more meaningful to our students.

At the same time THE JMRP ENGLISH SONG FESTIVAL has been consolidating as the central activity that       strengthens the seen topics in class in a playful way, while this promotes skills as singing, dancing and body language to communicate positive messages in English too.

So we try to incorporate many activities related to the song festival expecting these reinforce the topics we work period by period and at the same time students are going to prepare to the festival song.

This website is designed as a communicative strategy among English teachers, with students, with the staffs. In addition to, this guide to students toward independent learning, thus they can reinforce topics studied in class, increase vocabulary, and in general improve Listening and Reading skills.

conexionambiente is understood here as the link between language and context. We understand “environment” as physical interaction, also social and cultural cooperation between humans with the environment in which English learners move.

We named these places(environment): water, earth and air, with a symbolic meaning, and chose a characteristic animal from each place: starfish, squirrel and seagull in order to name 3 English levels, typically our students are in, but the intention is to use any item or activity here included to support the development of foreign language skills in any learner.

Each level has many activities like games, contest, vocabulary exercises, workshops, songs, videos…  to develop language skills (listening – Reading – writing –speaking) in many of them student can interact with the page and find if your answer is wrong or correct. Most of the activities are sources taken from different English pages, but we insert them in a level according to the necessity or students interest.

A brief description about this school

This public school is located in Copacabana Antioquia, attends  approximately 3.000 students every year; in preschool, primary, secondary, higher, and adult education. This school was divided in 4 leasable locations, but in September 20 -2011 it was moved to Ciudadela. It has a principal, 5 coordinators and 90 teachers (5 of them are  English teachers in high school and 2 in primary school).

It has 3 shifts:  morning, afternoon and evening.

Note: the pictures, drawings, videos, exercises and workshops made by students, teachers and other people have only pedagogycal interest, so they are here to be used as  material to share how this school understands the pedagogical act and use several elements to show what we do. This page has not commerical interest, thereby everything is lodged for educative purposes only.

Our page as a meaningful experience using TIC- It is a part of a video made by TELEANTIOQUIA in its program MENTES EN ACCIÓN.

How our students understand the levels

In these drawings several JM students capture ideas about the levels and illustrate them.

Their ideas are welcome, so we thanks a lot.
